How Many Artificial Green Wall Panels Do I Need?
Resposta curta: divide the wall area by the panel coverage, then add 5–10% for cuts. A 50 × 50 cm panel covers 0.25 m², so you need four panels per square metre; a 100 × 100 cm panel covers 1 m², so one panel per square metre. A 15 m² wall therefore needs 60 panels of 50 × 50 cm or 15 panels of 100 × 100 cm before waste.
This page gives you the formula, a worked conversion table, the waste allowance that actually holds on site, and a calculator that runs the numbers for both formats at once. All Weather Greens manufactures both formats, so the numbers below are based on the real panel dimensions we ship, not on nominal sizes.
Panel calculator: enter your wall dimensions
Figures round up to whole panels. Panel coverage is 0.25 m² for 50 × 50 cm and 1 m² for 100 × 100 cm.
The formula, and why it is that simple
Panel quantity = (wall width × wall height − openings) ÷ panel coverage × (1 + waste allowance), rounded up to the next whole panel. Because both formats are square, there is no grain direction or pattern repeat to allow for, which is why the calculation stays this short.
| Wall area | 50 × 50 cm (5% waste) | 50 × 50 cm (10% waste) | 100 × 100 cm (5% waste) | 100 × 100 cm (10% waste) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 m² | 21 panels | 22 panels | 6 panels | 6 panels |
| 10 m² | 42 panels | 44 panels | 11 panels | 11 panels |
| 15 m² | 63 panels | 66 panels | 16 panels | 17 panels |
| 20 m² | 84 panels | 88 panels | 21 panels | 22 panels |
| 50 m² | 210 panels | 220 panels | 53 panels | 55 panels |
| 100 m² | 420 panels | 440 panels | 105 panels | 110 panels |
Waste allowance: why 5% is rarely enough
Waste on a green wall does not come from breakage; it comes from edges. A flat rectangular wall with full panels at both ends needs about 5%. Add any of the following and 10% becomes the working figure:
- Inside and outside corners — a return of even 20 cm consumes a panel that cannot be reused elsewhere.
- Columns, pipe boxes and signage — each obstruction forces a cut, and offcuts rarely line up with the next gap.
- Top and bottom terminations — walls are seldom an exact multiple of 50 cm or 100 cm in height.
- Diagonal or curved edges — the offcut from a diagonal cut is usually unusable, so budget 15%.
Ordering short is the expensive mistake: a second production run for a few panels carries its own minimum quantity, freight and lead time. Ordering 10% over on a 15 m² wall costs six extra panels; a re-order can cost weeks.
50 × 50 cm or 100 × 100 cm: which wastes less?
The larger format wastes less on large flat walls because there are fewer seams and fewer cut edges per square metre. It also installs faster: a 50 m² wall is 200 panels in 50 × 50 cm against 50 panels in 100 × 100 cm, and every panel is another set of fixings and alignment.
The smaller format wins where the wall is broken up. For areas under roughly 10 m², around columns, or on walls you intend to mix several designs, 50 × 50 cm gives finer control and lets you start from a single panel.
| Project shape | Recommended format | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Large flat façade or interior wall, 20 m²+ | 100 × 100 cm | Fewer seams, faster install, less edge waste |
| Small feature wall under 10 m² | 50 × 50 cm | Finer control, no production minimum |
| Mixed designs in one wall | 50 × 50 cm | Design changes can follow a 50 cm grid |
| Heavy obstructions or diagonal edges | 50 × 50 cm | Smaller units absorb cuts with less loss |
Lead time differs by format
The 34 ready-stock designs in 50 × 50 cm ship from one panel and are dispatched within 5 working days. The 100 × 100 cm format is made to order, with a minimum of 50 m² per design and 10–15 working days after order and specification approval. If a project has a fixed installation date, the format choice can matter more than the panel count.

Perguntas frequentes
How many 50 × 50 cm panels are in one square metre?
Four. Each 50 × 50 cm panel covers 0.25 m², so one square metre takes exactly four panels before waste. With a 10% allowance, budget 4.4 panels per square metre.
Should I order extra panels for future repairs?
Sim, if the design is likely to be discontinued or the wall is in a high-touch area. Five percent of the total, stored flat and dry, covers most single-panel replacements without a re-order.
Does a curved wall need a different calculation?
Sim. Treat a curved wall as its developed (flattened) length, then add 15% rather than 10%, because curved fixing compresses panels on the inside of the curve and the offcuts cannot be reused.
Can I mix 50 × 50 cm and 100 × 100 cm on the same wall?
They can be combined, but the joint line needs a deliberate break — a horizontal band, a frame or a change of design — otherwise the difference in seam spacing reads as an error rather than a feature.
