Why Artificial Green Walls Fade Outdoors — UV Coating vs UV Stabiliser Built into the Granules

Short answer: artificial green walls fade because ultraviolet light breaks down the plastic and the pigment in the leaves. How fast that happens depends mostly on one thing buyers rarely ask about: whether the UV protection is sprayed onto the surface after production, or built into the raw material before the leaves are made.

This guide explains what actually causes fading, how the two methods differ, how to choose panels for high-sun regions such as the Gulf and Australia, and four questions that will tell you whether a supplier’s UV claim holds up.

What Actually Makes an Artificial Green Wall Fade?

Most artificial foliage is made from polyethylene (PE) or a similar plastic, coloured with pigment. Outdoors, three things work on it at the same time:

  • UV radiation breaks the chemical bonds in the polymer and in the pigment. The colour fades, and over time the leaf surface can turn chalky or brittle.
  • Heat speeds up that breakdown. A wall in full afternoon sun runs much hotter than the air around it.
  • Surface wear — wind-blown sand and dust, rain and regular rinsing — slowly abrades the outer layer of every leaf.

Untreated plastic foliage can show visible fading within a single hot season. Every outdoor-rated product therefore uses some form of UV protection. The real difference between products is where that protection sits.

Two Ways to Add UV Protection

Method 1: UV spray coating after production

The leaves are moulded first. A UV-blocking coating is then sprayed onto the finished leaves or the assembled panel.

  • The protection sits in a thin surface layer.
  • Coverage depends on how evenly each batch was sprayed, including the undersides and inner leaves of a dense panel.
  • Anything that wears the surface — sand, dust, cleaning, handling during installation — also wears the coating.

Method 2: UV stabiliser built into the granules

The UV stabiliser is mixed into the polyethylene granules, together with the colour, before the leaves are extruded and moulded.

  • The protection is distributed through the full thickness of every leaf, not just on top of it.
  • There is no separate coating to scuff, rinse or sand away.
  • The level of protection is fixed at the compounding stage, so it is the same from leaf to leaf and batch to batch.

An honest note: no artificial foliage lasts forever outdoors. UV stabilisers are consumed slowly over the years, and every outdoor wall ages. What the manufacturing method changes is how evenly and how long the protection holds — and whether ordinary wear removes it early.

Why This Matters Most in High-Sun Regions

The Gulf: UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman

In the UAE, UV levels are highest from March to September and can reach the “extreme” band. Summer heat regularly comes with dust and sand, and outdoor walls are rinsed often to keep them clean. Strong sun, abrasion and frequent washing are exactly the three conditions that wear a surface coating.

For Gulf projects, see our UV-resistant artificial green wall panels for the UAE.

Australia

Australia has some of the highest UV levels in the world, and many walls face long hours of direct sun. Remember that in the southern hemisphere the north- and west-facing walls take the most sun — the opposite of Europe and the Gulf.

For Australian trade buyers, see artificial green wall supply for Australia.

Southern Europe and other sunny climates

Mediterranean terraces, poolside screens and restaurant façades in full sun face the same problem at a lower intensity. The same choice of method applies.

Choosing Panels for Full-Sun Walls

  1. Check the orientation. Walls that take direct afternoon sun age fastest: south and west in the northern hemisphere, north and west in the southern hemisphere.
  2. Prefer green-dominant designs for full sun. Darker and more saturated colours absorb more radiation. Dense, mostly green foliage — for example 1M130 or 1M136 — is the safer choice.
  3. Leave an air gap. Panels fixed with a free-draining gap behind them run cooler than panels fixed tight against a hot wall.
  4. Ask about a higher UV grade for the most exposed walls. Higher UV-grade options are available on request.
  5. Rinse gently. Water is enough. Avoid solvents and aggressive cleaning agents.

Why the base material matters: virgin PE (left) stays flexible, while plastic filled with recycled material (right) snaps. A UV stabiliser cannot protect a leaf that has already lost its flexibility.

Our UV Evidence

  • UV stabiliser compounded into 100% virgin PE before extrusion — not sprayed on.
  • SGS 4,000-hour UV exposure test on our outdoor panel range.
  • Written fade warranty: 3 years outdoor, 5 years indoor.

4 Questions to Ask Any Supplier About UV Resistance

  1. Is the UV stabiliser added at the granule stage, or sprayed on after production? If the answer is vague, assume it is a surface treatment.
  2. Which UV test was done, for how many hours, to which standard, and with what result? “UV tested” on its own tells you nothing. Ask for the report.
  3. Is the fade warranty in writing — how many years outdoors, and what does it cover? A verbal “it lasts many years” is not a warranty.
  4. Will you send samples for an outdoor test? This is the most convincing check of all, and it costs very little.

The Simplest Test: Side-by-Side in the Sun

Put samples from each supplier you are considering next to each other on a sun-facing wall or roof. Leave them for six to eight weeks, rinse them once or twice as you would a real installation, and compare colour and leaf condition.

We will send up to 3 sample pieces for exactly this test — you pay the express courier only. Request samples or browse the full panel range first.

FAQ

Why do artificial green walls fade?

Ultraviolet light breaks down the plastic and the pigment in the leaves. Heat speeds the process up, and sand, dust and cleaning wear the leaf surface.

Is a UV spray coating enough for outdoor use?

It depends on the coating and the conditions. Because the protection sits in a surface layer, sand, dust and regular rinsing can wear it in exposed areas. Ask for a test report and a written warranty.

What does “UV stabiliser built into the granules” mean?

The UV stabiliser is mixed into the polyethylene granules before the leaves are extruded, so the protection runs through the full thickness of every leaf rather than sitting on the surface.

Will UV-stabilised panels never fade?

No outdoor artificial foliage lasts forever. A stabiliser built into the material slows fading and is not removed by surface wear, but orientation, colour and climate still affect how a wall ages.

How long do outdoor artificial green walls last?

It depends on sun exposure, orientation, colour and installation. Our outdoor panels carry a written 3-year outdoor fade warranty. Tell us the location and orientation of your wall and we will recommend suitable designs.

How can I compare two suppliers’ UV performance?

Ask how UV protection is added, which test was done and to which standard, and what the warranty covers. Then place samples side by side in full sun for six to eight weeks.
