Outdoor UV-Resistant Artificial Green Walls

Outdoor greenery fails for one reason more than any other: ultraviolet degradation. Sunlight breaks down the polymer chains in the foliage, and the first visible symptom is a shift from green towards blue-grey, followed by loss of flexibility and eventually crumbling. This page explains how UV stabilisation actually works in an artificial green wall panel, what determines how long a panel lasts outdoors, and what our outdoor warranty does and does not cover.

Why Outdoor Greenery Fails: What UV Actually Does

Artificial foliage for exterior use is normally made from polyethylene or a comparable polymer. Untreated, that polymer is vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation: UV energy breaks molecular bonds in the material, which shows up as pigment breakdown (fading) and then as embrittlement — the leaves become stiff and begin to shed.

The failure is not uniform. A panel on a north-facing wall in a temperate climate behaves very differently from the same panel on a west-facing wall in a high-altitude or tropical location. That is why any honest answer about outdoor lifespan has to describe the conditions it applies to, not just quote a number.

Compounded UV Stabilisation vs Surface Coatings

There are two broad ways to make a polymer product UV-resistant:

  • Overfladebehandling — a UV-blocking coating is applied to the finished leaves or the assembled panel. Because it sits on the surface, its performance depends on how well that layer survives handling, cleaning and weather, and it can be worn or scuffed away in exposed areas.
  • Compounded stabilisation — the UV inhibitor system is blended into the polymer before the material is extruded and coloured. The stabiliser is distributed through the material rather than sitting on top of it, so there is no separate surface layer to be removed.

Our outdoor range uses the compounded route. Panels are produced from 100% virgin LDPE with the UV inhibitor system blended in during extrusion, before the foliage is formed and coloured. There is no applied coating layer.

It is worth being precise about what that does and does not imply. Compounded stabilisation removes the “coating wears off” failure mode. Det gør ikke make a panel immune to UV — it slows degradation, and how long it slows it depends on the formulation, the pigment system and the exposure. A supplier who tells you a compounded panel will never fade in full sun is overstating it.

What Determines How Long a Panel Lasts Outdoors

When comparing outdoor claims between suppliers, these are the variables that actually matter:

  • Exposure intensity — latitude, altitude and local climate. The same panel specification will last longer in northern Europe than in the Gulf, Australia or the tropics.
  • Orientation and shading — a wall that takes direct afternoon sun for six hours a day ages faster than one that is shaded for part of the day.
  • Colour and pigment — darker and more saturated colours absorb more radiation; lighter and more muted foliage typically holds its appearance longer.
  • The rest of the construction — the backing grid, structural panel and fixings are all exposed too, and each has its own ageing behaviour.
  • Installation — panels fixed with a free-draining air gap behind them dry faster and run cooler than panels fixed tight against a wall.
  • Cleaning — dust and pollen on the surface hold moisture and reduce the panel’s ability to shed heat. Occasional rinsing helps; aggressive solvents do not.

If you tell us the country, the orientation and the mounting arrangement, we can tell you which of our constructions we would recommend and what we would expect in that situation — rather than quoting a single figure regardless of where it is going.

Our Outdoor Warranty

Our panels carry a written warranty against colour fade of 3 years for outdoor installations og 5 years for indoor installations.

The outdoor warranty applies to the specified SKU when the panel is installed and maintained under the documented conditions for that product. It does not cover mechanical damage, damage from cleaning agents outside the recommended range, or installations in conditions materially more severe than those specified at the time of order. We set the outdoor period at three years deliberately: it is a figure we are prepared to stand behind across the range, rather than a marketing number that only holds in the mildest climate we sell into.

If a project requires a longer or otherwise different warranty position, raise it at enquiry stage — depending on the construction and the volume we can discuss what is achievable for that project.

Weather Beyond UV: Rain, Frost and Wind

Ultraviolet radiation is the main ageing mechanism, but it is not the only load on an outdoor installation:

  • Rain — polyethylene foliage does not absorb water. What matters is drainage: the backing and the mounting detail should let water run off rather than sit behind the panel.
  • Frost and freeze-thaw — the polymer itself tolerates low temperatures; the risk sits in trapped moisture and in fixings, not in the foliage.
  • Wind — this is where most outdoor installations actually fail. Wind load acts on the panel and is transferred to the fixings and the substrate, so mechanical fixing to a sound substrate matters more than the panel specification.
  • Heat cycling — repeated expansion and contraction is hardest on rigid fixings and on joints; a mounting detail that allows slight movement lasts longer than one that fully restrains the panel.

Fixing and Installation Outdoors

Outdoor panels are supplied with a rigid grid backing intended for mechanical fixing. Best practice for exterior work:

  • Fix back to a sound substrate — masonry, timber framing or a metal frame — not to cladding or render alone.
  • Leave a ventilation gap behind the panel so moisture can drain and the panel runs cooler.
  • Use corrosion-resistant fixings appropriate to the substrate and to coastal or high-humidity conditions.
  • In high-wind or exposed locations, increase the number of fixing points and check the substrate, not just the panel.

If you send us the wall construction and a photograph, we will advise on the fixing pattern. Vores installation guide covers the general sequence for panel assembly.

Ofte stillede spørgsmål

How long do your outdoor panels last?

Our outdoor installations carry a 3-year written warranty against colour fade, and indoor installations 5 years. The warranty applies to the specified SKU when installed and maintained under the documented conditions. Actual service life beyond the warranty period depends heavily on exposure — latitude, altitude, orientation and mounting. Tell us where the panels are going and we will tell you what we would expect for that situation.

How is the UV resistance built in?

The UV inhibitor system is blended into 100% virgin LDPE during extrusion, before the foliage is formed and coloured, rather than applied as a coating to the finished surface. That means there is no separate surface layer to wear or wash away. It slows UV degradation; it does not make the panel immune to it.

Will the panels fade in full sun?

All polymer materials change over time under sustained UV exposure, and we would not claim otherwise. What compounded stabilisation changes is the rate at which that happens, and the fact that protection is not dependent on a surface coating remaining intact. Lighter, more muted foliage colours generally hold their appearance longer than darker, highly saturated ones.

Can the panels handle heavy rain, frost or snow?

Ja. Polyethylene foliage does not absorb water, and the backing is designed to drain. Frost does not damage the foliage itself. The points to get right are drainage behind the panel and the choice of fixings. In high-wind or heavy-snow locations, mechanical fixing to a sound substrate is essential and the fixing pattern should be increased.

Do you have UV test documentation?

We can supply the material specification for the panel you are considering, and we will tell you what third-party test documentation is available for that specific SKU and construction. If your project requires a particular accelerated-ageing standard, tell us the standard and the exposure class at enquiry stage so we can confirm what can be provided for that order rather than assume it.

Can you tell me exactly how many years the panels will last?

No — and we would be cautious about any supplier who gives you a single number without asking where the panels are going. Outdoor service life is a function of UV intensity, orientation, colour, mounting and maintenance. What we can give you is a written warranty period we are prepared to stand behind, plus an assessment based on your specific location and installation.

What is the maintenance requirement outdoors?

Occasional rinsing to remove dust and pollen is enough, and it helps the panel shed heat. Ingen vanding, pruning or pest control is required. For specific cleaning agents, ask us before use — aggressive solvents are not appropriate and are outside the warranty conditions.
